Today in class we did an essay about a poem called "The Fort" by Marie Howe. First we read the poem then after that annotated the poem. There are many literally devices used in "The Fort" such as imagery, alliteration and similes. In Line 27 they use alliteration and imagery in the same sentence. "The strange self-contained voices they used." I think she are using alliteration because the s sound in the beginning of strange and self-contained. I also think that Marie Howe expresses imagery because she is helping the reading imaged the self-contained voices. My opinion about this poem is that the author might want to fit in with her brother or maybe Marie Howe thinks that she is left out when she is with her brother because in the boys' fort they don't allow girls in their fort. In the poem is repeats the word "we" six times but the author never explains who "we" is. The author also repeats "us". I think that "us" and "we" might be other girls that she might be friends with or her sister. It only says that she only has a brother. This poem is a free verse because it has no pattern to it. At the end of the poem on line 33 I belive that Marie Howe might have been jealous because it says " We wanted to watch them live there." Even though there are no girls allowed. This is what I learned today in class.
