“The Pie” Summary
The short story "The Pie" by Gary Soto is takes place in a German Market, but not for very long. The main character is the author himself; it tells the reader that Gary Soto is talking in first person. A fact about Gary Soto is that he writes from experience. The conflict is that he loves pies. Such as "pecan [pie] and apple [pie] my favorites, although cherry looked good, and my dear, fat-faced chocolate was always a good bet." (Paragraph 2) He enjoys eating pie so much that he would steal it from the German Market. The person who works there is described by "forehead shone with a window of light." (Paragraph 2) Gary Soto tells the reader that it is a metaphor and talks about personification. Gary starts to feel guilty that he stole the pie. On top of that guilt Gary didn’t share with Crossed-Eyed Johnny, who is neighbor child. Gary thinks either about the pie on the racks, sin and the forehead. A moment later a car honks at Gary but it was his fault because Gary wasn't looking if the cars were passing by. Later on he goes home and sits on the roof Gary accidentally falls. He is injured. When Gary was sitting on the curb his conscious was making him feel guilty. He images that everyone knows what he has done even though they don't know. Gary feels bad and goes home and listens to the plumbing. The short story ends of by saying," I knew sin was what you took and didn't give back." (Paragraph 8)
