Earl Lloyd was an amazing retired basketball player and also an amazing historical figure. Lloyd was born on April 3, 1929 at Alexandra, Virginia and currently 85 years old. Earl started playing during high school at Parker - Gray High School. Lloyd's nickname is called "Big Cat" due to him being extremely tall and playing very well in games. In 1947 he became known as one of the best offense players for the Yellow Jackets at West Virginia State University. The Yellow Jackets went to two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conferences and Tournaments Championships in 1948 and 1949 where they ended up in 2nd place. When Lloyd played games in the 1950's the audience weren't exactly cheering but instead said to him saying "‘Go back to Africa.’ And I’m telling you, you would often hear the N-word. That was commonplace. There were a lot of people who sat close to you who gave you the blues, man.” even when the audience don't support him he didn't let that getting the way of his career.
Lloyd achieved the best performance of his career during 1954 - 1955 where he scored a total of 731 points that helped the Nationals to the Eastern Division Championship giving him the honor of being the first African American to win an NBA title. Before Lloyd was sent to Korea to serve for two years, he had planned to return to the Washington Capitals but after he had found out that they had run out of bushiness he went to play for the Syracuse Nationals In 1952 through 1958 he played for the Syracuse Nationals which earned his nickname "Big Cat". Lloyd was named CIAA Player of the Decade for nine years straight. In 1958 Earl was exchanged to the Detroit Pistons for two years until he decided to retire at the age 32.
