Summary for chapter one
In the first chapter “Ten Letter” by Eli Saslow is called “I lost my job, my health benefits and myself worth in
a matter of 3 days.” I think that Saslow named that first chapter that because it makes the reader wonder
what caused this to happen. The title name explains it itself throughout the chapter. The beginning of “I lost
my job, my health benefits and myself worth in a matter of 3 days.” It starts out with President Obama
receiving a “purple folder” each night. Inside the “purple folder” has letters that people of America send
him. The letters are positive and negative but there was this one letter that inspired him. It was sent from
Monroe, Michigan. The person who sent the letter is named Jennifer Cline (Jen). She has a connection
with President Obama because they both came from middle class and have two children. Jen has a
difficult life because she doesn’t have a job, has no money, will be filing for a bankruptcy and she has
chemo. When Jen tells her father that she is filing for a bankruptcy they get in an agreement about it. They
have to start all over again and Jen and her husband. Once they have the papers to do so they start over
with her two children and husband and live a new life.
