Chapter 5: The Toil of Trace and Trail
Discussion Questions:
1.) Reread London'd first description of Hal and Charles. What do you think will happen to them based on this initial description? I think that Hal is a hunter that is not well prepared. Charles knows what he is doing for a little while. I think that they will get attacked by bears or get lost in the trail to go to Dawson.
2.) What was Mercedes' reaction when experienced men went though to lighten the load? What does this say about her and about her relationship with her husband and brother? She is really unhappy because she wants everything that she has already. It says that she cared for the dogs but is kind of nice to her brother and husband.
3.) Compare Charles, Hal and Mercedes to any other characters you've met in other books, movies, plays, television shows, or real life. What traits did Buck have that allowed him to adapt to the north that they lacked? Charles is like the good person and bad person. He is like Waior. Hal is like the guy in home alone that little boy. Mercedes is like that little girl from Wille Wanka. The traits are important now because he needs them to go find his way back home
4.) Why do you think London included these three characters in the book? What do they represent? London includes some mean and not so smart people. They represent like his family.
5.) Why did Buck refuse to rise and lead the team? What did he have that his masters lacked? Buck refuse because he has more experience then they do. He has been on this trail many times than they have been in the trail so Buck knows more than his masters do.
